Care & Maintenance

Routine Maintenance

  • Dust, sweep or vacuum the floor regularly to prevent any buildup of dirt or gritty substances that can scratch or dull the floor. If you do vacuum, do not use on with a beater brush, they can cause damage to the floor.
  • Any spills should be cleaned up immediately with a damp mop or cloth.
  • Occasionally clean the floor with a resilient floor cleaner.

Preventative Care

  • Protective mats. Place mats outside of all entrances and exits, and make sure to clean them on a regular basis. They will absorb soil and moisture and trap excessive dirt, sand, grit, oil, asphalt, or driveway sealer that would otherwise be tracked inside. Mats that are 100% latex-backed should be used. Do not use mats with rubber backing, as they can discolor the flooring. We also recommend using latex-based driveway sealer to prevent any staining.
  • Appliances. Be aware that refrigerators, ranges or other heat-producing appliances, or hot air registers that produce heat over 120°F, can burn, fade or discolor your floor. Any hot objects, such as matches or cigarettes, can also burn and damage your vinyl floor.
  • Furniture legs. All the legs should have large surface floor protectors that are non-staining. Use flat, smooth glides to replace dome shaped, small, or narrow metal glides. To keep from scratching the floor, these glides should have self-adhesive felt pads. They also need to be checked regularly for wear and dirt and then replaced when needed.
  • Heavy appliances/furniture. Any appliance or piece of furniture that is heavy and rarely moved should have flat furniture cups or casters that are non-staining and of appropriate size. The available sizes are round, 1 3/8” to 1 5/8”, and square, 1 ½” to 2 5/8”.
  • Moveable appliances/furniture. Mobile appliances should have casters that swivel easily. These casters should have a diameter of 2” and ¾” hard rubber treads that are non-staining. Ball shaped casters should not be used.
  • Be careful of your feet. Avoid wearing stiletto-style heels, cleats, or spiked golf shoes on your flooring. They may cause scratches and indentations. ​
  • Sunlight protection. Keep window coverings closed during the times of day when there’s heavy sunlight. Resilient floors can fade or get discolored if overexposed to the sun.

After Installation Care

  • To make certain you get a proper seam bond on your resilient flooring, protect the sealed seams and do not tamper with them for at least 16 hours after the application of the seam sealer.
  • Grouted vinyl: no traffic at all on the floor for 24 hours, then only light traffic for the following 24 hours. After 48 hours you can return to regular foot traffic
  • Un-grouted vinyl: traffic should be kept at a minimum for 48 hours in order for the adhesive to harden. (This is for floors such as resilient sheet, resilient tile, Adura or DuraCeramic.)
  • Do not put any furniture on the floor until the grout and adhesive have had sufficient time to dry. Grouted vinyl floors need 48 hours and all other vinyl floors need at least 24 hours.
  • Be very careful when moving heavy appliances and furniture to prevent floor damage or tearing. You should use strips of hardboard panels or plywood and lay them on the floor. Then, take the piece of furniture or appliance and slide, roll or walk it across the boards.
  • Use a resilient floor cleaner to wash your floor 48 hours after the installation.

Before Installation Day

  • Furniture is the first step. All furniture and other objects need to be removed from the installation areas. Our installers can remove your furniture, but there may be an additional charge. If we do remove your furniture, you will need to empty any contents of the furniture or closets. We also do not disconnect or reconnect electronics such as TVs, computers, etc.
  • >The area of installation must be climate controlled (heated or air conditioned). Indoor humidity needs to stay between 45-65%.
  • Take into consideration how your old floor covering will be taken up and disposed of. This can be time consuming and we recommend checking with us about the cost and the method of disposal. If you prefer to remove your current flooring, please do this at least one day prior to arrival of your flooring product to allow time for cleanup and floor preparation. If you are removing old carpet, please leave tack strips where they are and pull the staples out of the floor from the original pad.
  • What to do concerning your trim. Any shoe molding and quarter round needs to be removed for vinyl installation. Your installer can do this but at an additional charge and they will not be responsible for damage or breakage due to dry or brittle wood. Paint on walls, baseboards and woodwork may also need touch-ups after installation is complete. If this is happens, it is your responsibility.
  • Make sure your clean-up plan is clearly discussed with installers. Vinyl installation will produce waste. These materials are usually collected by your installer and left at your trash site. Check with your salesperson before the day of installation so you’re clear about the clean-up, if there are added costs to do so, and ask about the plan for any extra materials to be left for you to be used for future repairs if necessary.

During Installation Day

  • Your presence is essential on installation day. You should be prepared to be at home and available for any questions the installers may have. You being there will insure that the appropriate vinyl gets installed in the correct areas. Since it is difficult to estimate the length and circumstances of each job, installers may not always be able to give you an exact time of arrival. Our suggestion is to be flexible and stay in contact with your retail salesperson and installers.
  • Family safety is another very important part of the installation day. Make sure to keep your children and pets out of the work area on the installation day because it can be a hazardous area.
  • Before the job is complete, we recommend you do a walk-through. Have the chief installer walk you through the whole job. This will provide a chance to ask any questions you may have.

After Installation Day

  • Make sure the rooms have good ventilation, especially if you are sensitive to odors or dust. Good ventilation should be instituted for 48-72 hours after installation.
  • All of the seamed areas need to be protected for at least 24 hours. Do not walk on the seams or the seam sealer. Make sure to keep the temperature of the new vinyl rooms at 68° F or higher for a minimum of two days after the installation. This will ensure that the adhesives set correctly.
  • Be very careful moving appliances back into the room. You should use an underlayment product, like particleboard or plywood (at least 3/8” thick), and place it on the new flooring to protect the new vinyl from any possible damage. Even the refrigerator’s wheels can cause damage without an underlayment to protect the floor.
